Neodymium Magnet Sample Approval: A Practical Checklist for New Parts

Neodymium Magnet Sample Approval

A sample approval process helps a buyer and supplier confirm that they are discussing the same finished magnet part before production is released. It is most useful when a part has several defining details, such as a specific shape, coating, magnetization direction, tolerance requirement or assembly interface.

The sample is a controlled reference for the agreed part definition. It does not replace application validation, safety review or performance testing in the finished product. Where a magnet is used in a critical assembly, the buyer should assess the completed assembly under its own expected conditions.

Start with one controlled part definition

Put the agreed requirements into one drawing, specification or revision controlled request before the sample is made. Define the requested material and grade, finished geometry and tolerances, coating or finish, magnetization direction, sample quantity, identification and packing requirements.

Review the finished sample

Inspect the sample as the finished item that will be supplied, rather than only as an unfinished magnet. Review its form and surface condition, critical dimensions, coating, magnetic configuration and identification against the controlled drawing or specification.

Check the sample in the intended assembly

When practical, assess the sample with the mating component, fixture, housing or adhesive process that will be used in the product. This helps the project team identify fit, orientation, handling or process questions before production release.

• Confirm that the magnet fits the intended pocket, fixture or mating component.

• Confirm orientation before a polarity sensitive assembly step is released.

• Review any air gap, fastener feature, adhesive area or protective component relevant to the application.

• Consider handling controls for brittle magnets, strong attraction and nearby magnetically sensitive items.

Record acceptance and revision status

The approval record should state the accepted part revision, sample identification, inspection points, open items and change history. If the drawing, material, finish or magnetic configuration changes, treat the change as a new review point rather than assuming the earlier sample still represents the production part.

Sample request checklist

• Part number and controlled drawing or specification revision.

• Required material, finished size, coating and magnetization details.

• Critical inspection points and the intended acceptance basis.

• Sample quantity, desired packaging and identification requirements.

• Whether the sample will be reviewed as a standalone part, in an assembly, or both.

A clear sample prevents avoidable rework

A practical neodymium magnet sample approval plan aligns the team around one finished part definition, a defined set of checks and an identifiable accepted revision. That clarity supports more efficient communication before production while leaving application specific validation with the responsible project team.
